How to tag songs on Spotify
Updated
Spotify doesn’t let you add your own tags to songs. You can save songs, put them in playlists and, in the phone app in some countries, filter Liked Songs by genre and mood labels that Spotify picks for you. But you can’t mark a song “late night” or “gym” yourself.
You can still tag your Spotify songs. Here are three ways, from quickest to most complete.
1. Tag songs in your browser on Tagify Community
Tagify Community is a free website for tagging music. It works in any browser, on your phone or your computer, with nothing to install.
- Create a free account and pick a starter set of tags, or make your own as you go.
- Find a song. Search Community’s music, or paste the song’s link from Spotify (Share → Copy link).
- Add your tags. As many as fit: a genre, a mood, when you play it.
Click any tag to see everything you’ve put it on, and what other people tag the same way. Every song links back to Spotify, so you can play it there.
Good to know: tags you add on the website are public. They show on your profile and help other people find music. You add songs one at a time; to tag a whole library at once, use Tagify in Spotify desktop.
2. Tag songs inside Spotify desktop with Tagify
Tagify is a free, open-source app that adds tagging to the Spotify desktop app on Windows, Mac and Linux. Right-click a song to tag it, or select a whole playlist and tag it in one go. It gives you:
- Tags organized in folders, like Mood → Calm or Genre → House → Deep House
- Star ratings and energy levels
- Filters that combine tags, like “chill and rainy day, but no vocals”
- Smart playlists that fill themselves with every song that matches your tags. They’re normal Spotify playlists, so they play on your phone too.
It works with Spotify Free and Premium, and your tags stay private unless you choose to share them on Community. Tagify runs on Spicetify, a free tool for customizing Spotify desktop; the Tagify installer sets up both. It doesn’t work in Spotify’s web player or phone app.

3. Use playlists as tags
No new app needed: make one playlist per tag (“Gym”, “Sad”, “Sunday morning”) and add each song to every playlist it fits. It works everywhere Spotify does. It gets slow quickly, though: a song with five tags needs five separate adds, and there’s no way to ask for songs that are in two playlists at once.
Can I tag Spotify songs on my phone?
Yes, on Community in your phone’s browser. Spotify’s phone app has no way to add your own tags, and Tagify’s desktop app doesn’t run on phones. On Community, search for the song, or in Spotify tap ⋯ → Share → Copy link and paste the link. If you also use Tagify on a computer, connect it to Community and changes you make in either place show up in both.
Which one should I use?
